"Yayoi is a wonder." —Gil Goldstein

Join us for an evening of jazz with the Yayoi Ikawa Trio at Klavierhaus on Tuesday, December 3, as part of our Japanese Jazz Piano Series, From Tokyo to Times Square.

Yayoi Ikawa, born in Tokyo and musically nurtured in New York, is a versatile pianist, composer, arranger, and bandleader known for her innovative blend of traditional Japanese influences and contemporary jazz. After moving from Japan, she quickly embraced a range of styles, including jazz, gospel, R&B, soul, classical, and world music. Her education at the New School, where she earned the Henry and Gill Block scholarship, laid the foundation for her multifaceted career, resulting in a sound that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.

Yayoi has performed at international jazz festivals in Japan, Italy, Haiti, France, Slovenia, and Costa Rica, earning acclaim for her expressive playing and creative compositions. Her discography includes the jazz piano trio album “Angel Eyes” and the self-produced “Color of Dreams,” showcasing her original works. In 2008, she launched “The Bridge Project” to foster musical collaboration between New York and Tokyo musicians. In addition to her performance and recording work, she has collaborated with legends like Reggie Workman and Michael Carvin and received commissions from the Modern Music Society of Tokyo and the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. She currently serves as the music director at First Baptist Church in Piscataway, NJ, and teaches jazz piano at City College of New York and Brooklyn College.

Don’t miss this chance to experience Yayoi’s innovative fusion of Japanese and contemporary jazz.
